But there needs to be a purpose to the violence if you’re trying to elevate yourself above a slasher film. I’m okay with that – I’ve seen my fair share of horror films. That leads me to Act 2 – the torture porn phase of the film. The violence of Act 2 is so grotesque that it seems to make audiences forget that nothing happened for the first hour of the movie. In the same way that building anticipation is not an acceptable excuse for making passengers wait in line for an hour at an amusement park ride, I call BS on those who say they were wrought with tension, sitting on the edge of their seats through the movie’s lead-up. And in case it sounds like I mean that in a good way, I don’t. The sole purpose it achieves, I argue, is to lull the audience into a quiet complacency (because using the word “boredom” would just be rude), to make the violent Act 2 all the more shocking.

are all acceptable – albeit clichéd – choices, in this movie they do little to support the development of a rich story, characters, or mood. While the dreary landscape, clinical interior, lighting, etc. But in Goodnight Mommy, I don’t agree that the cinematography actually accomplishes what it supposedly intends to do. Sure, this is an approach that can absolutely be successful in creating a brooding sense of tension in a good suspense or horror film. The “minimalist” cinematography seems to be one of the most praised elements of the film. Here’s why this movie is, in my opinion, terrible. But following a casual post-movie night search, I have found almost zero negative reviews on this movie, and simply cannot let that stand.

In fact, I’ve never written a movie review before. I rarely feel the need to add my voice to the multitude of reviews that exist for any movie. I mean, it had subtitles! And exotic names! And squishy bouncy mud that that left North American viewers very confused! I know, blasphemy, right? To criticize a foreign horror film as universally acclaimed as Goodnight Mommy.
